Content and objectives:
This course aims at understanding why vast differences in incomes across regions and nations persist and what factors boost development.

In the lecture, we will shed light on basic and advanced concepts of economic development. This course focuses on supply- and demand-side drivers of growth, including international trade, human capital and institutions. Students will also learn to identify causal links between economic growth and these drivers by studying empirical research. To complete the picture, we will look at the link between economic growth and income distribution within and across countries. Standard growth models are covered by the course Advanced Macroeconomics, but we will use the Solow model in some contexts. See below for a detailed outline.

The tutorial serves to apply our skills. You will use basic maths and graphical analysis to solve problem sets based on the theories and empirical analyses discussed in the lecture. We offer detailed explanations of the solutions in the tutorial, but encourage you to look at the problem sets before each tutorial. We also upload short solutions on Moodle (LMS).

We provide a video primer for this course, which explains basic concepts such as production functions and productivity. This content is a prerequisite for this course, and the video allows you to study at your own pace depending on your current level of knowledge.

Grading:
Exam (60 minutes) covering the lecture content and similar to the problem sets covered in the tutorials. A mock exam will be provided. Successful students will receive 6 ECTS. Active participation in the class is highly acknowledged.
