Contents

Digitalization has reshaped international trade in two ways: it has transformed how trade in physical goods is conducted, and it has given rise to an entirely new class of tradable products, including software, mobile applications, games, cloud services, and digital advertising, that cross borders without entering customs statistics. This seminar addresses topics in this area.

Each participant takes a recent empirical study as a starting point for their own analysis. Students are expected to work with data themselves. Topics will be drawn from areas such as digital trade regulation and data policy restrictions, language barriers in digital markets, e-commerce and the geography of trade costs, digital taxation, and trade in digitally delivered products. Term papers document not only the results but also the analytical choices made along the way.

The seminar consists of a kick-off meeting introducing the topic area and the data sources; a one-day presentation block; and regular online support sessions for individual guidance.

Prior exposure to applied econometrics is expected. Students may use Stata or R.
